Ton Pentre produced another fine display of football at Ynys Park in this Welsh Football League Division One match against Newport YMCA, with Andy Mainwaring scoring his first goal for the Bulldogs and Ryan Jenkins adding the other to secure all three points.
Newport were a big and physical side and Ton Pentre realised from early on that their pace and trickery on the ground was going to be the way to beat this team.
The power of Andy Mainwaring in between the swiftness of Alyn Jones and Ryan Jenkins meant that the Bulldogs had a well balanced front line that caused Newport YMCA problems for the entire match.
Mainwaring has been desperate to open up his Ton goal scoring account since joining the Ynys Park club in March and had come close on several occasions in this match but each time he was denied by a good save or last gasp defending.
The former Bridgend Town player finally got the goal he was looking for during the first half of play. Following a shot from a Ton player the goalkeeper parried the ball to the far post where Mainwaring was able to head the Bulldogs into the lead. The player looked elated and relieved to have got off the mark for his new club.
Marty Ellacott was called into action several times during the first half and on each occasion he denied Newport YMCA from levelling the scores.
Newport’s best chance saw former Merthyr Tydfil striker Lewis Sommer’s cleanly connect with a cross from the left, but his goal bound header was somehow kept out by Ellacott’s agility as he pounced across the goal mouth to pluck the ball out of the air.
Ton Pentre made the score-line look a little more comfortable after the half time interval with a goal from Ryan Jenkins. Alyn Jones saw his shot saved but spilled by the goalkeeper and that allowed Jenkins the opportunity to score.
Newport YMCA did threaten to get back into this match when they put Ton Pentre under pressure through a series of corners but each ball into the box was dealt with by either Ellacott or one of the Ton defenders.
Overall this was a comfortable win for Ton Pentre whose next two matches are on the road. On Wednesday 11th April Ton travel to Ely Rangers, who are struggling at the bottom of the table, for a 6.30pm kick-off. Then on Saturday 14th April the Rhondda Bulldogs face a tough test at Goytre United (2.30pm).
