Cardiff Corries 3 - 0 Ton Pentre
MacWhirter Welsh Football League Division One
Saturday 25th October 2008
Cardiff Corinthians produced a wonderful display of football as they shocked the Rhondda Bulldogs of Ton Pentre at their Riverside Ground in Radyr.
Despite dominating the first 25 minutes of play Ton Pentre were made to rue missed opportunities, as from their first attack of any significance the home team took the lead.
Completely against the run of play Andy Smith connected with a cross from the left to head the ball past Kieran Blackburn in the Ton goals.
Within a minute Ton looked odds on to equalise when Andrew Hughes headed an effort that forced Corries goalkeeper Mike Lewis into making a superb save to claw the ball away with his left hand.
As the ball was sent back into the box following the keeper’s save, Phil Clarke sent his shot over the crossbar with just Lewis to beat.
Ton were made to pay for this missed attempt in the 31st minute as Corries increased their lead. Nicky Hooper broke through the defence to take a swipe at goal but his shot was saved well by Blackburn.
The Ton goalkeeper was unable to hold onto the ball and Rhys Yates followed up to apply the finish and give Cardiff Corries a 2-0 lead.
It got worse for the Bulldogs five minutes later when poor defending allowed Corries a route on goal once again. They took full advantage of the opportunity even though the shot was thumped straight at Blackburn, as unfortunately for the keeper the ball hit his body and bounced over him and into the net.
In the second half Ton were rendered ineffective as Cardiff Corries did well to contain the Bulldogs with an impressive all round performance.
The Corries were happy to sit back and defend their lead, and as Ton threw more and more men forward in search of a breakthrough the home team attempted to counter attack.
On one of these occasions Hooper rounded the Ton keeper out wide in the 18-yard box after Corries outnumbered the Ton defence but fortunately for the Bulldogs Mark Crutch was on hand to clear the ball off the goal line from the resulting shot.
Ton’s best chance of a goal in the second half was the result of a 69th minute corner kick. Ryan Morgan connected well with the kick into the box but his powerful header was denied by a clearance on the Corries goal line.
Cardiff Corries comfortably held out for the rest of this match as Ton Pentre’s poor form continues.
Ton will look to rectify this dip in form when they travel to Dinas Powys on Saturday 1st November for a 2pm kick off.
