Ton Pentre’s five goal performance caused internal arguing amongst the Bettws team that lead to experienced defender Jon Wile being sent off for punching a fellow team mate in the face.
After the Rhondda Bulldogs had taken a 3-0 lead just before the half time interval, Wile and Bettws goalkeeper Leon Cosker were screaming at each other before tempers frayed and punches thrown. Wile was red carded and left on his own in the changing rooms at half time while Bettws stayed out on the pitch. Cosker was bleeding from his mouth and was substituted during the interval.
It all started to go wrong for Bettws after eight minutes when Wile brought Ryan Shugar down in the box after the player had rounded two defenders with his skill to get into the goal area. Dale Price scored for the Bulldogs from the penalty spot to give Ton the lead.
Ton Pentre’s second goal 20 minutes later was the result of some exquisite football. Alyn Jones held the ball up on the right wing following Shugar’s call telling him to wait for his run on the outside. Jones threaded a perfect pass into Shugar’s path that allowed him the time and space to cross into the Bettws box. His cross was met by Lee Matthews who volleyed his shot into the net for a sweet goal.
The Rhondda Bulldogs made it 3-0 in the 45th minute with Jones notching up another assist when he played Raith Plant into a one on one with Cosker. Plant lifted the ball over the goalkeeper and into the net to put the match well beyond Bettws.
The third goal led to the red card incident leaving Bettws with ten men and an outfield player in goal for the rest of the match as the Ton Pentre players looked on in amazement.
Dale Price was unlucky not to score his second goal of the game when he lobbed the Bettws goalkeeper from around 25 yards out. The ball rattled the cross bar and looked as though it had crossed the line before Shugar had raced into the 6 yard box to make sure that it was goal, as it looked unlikely that the referee or his assistant was going to award it to Price.
Ten men Bettws did get themselves on the score sheet before Ton netted their fifth goal, when Gavin Thomas powered his way from midfield and through the Ton defence to score a consolation goal in the 76th minute.
The Rhondda Bulldogs replied to this with goal themselves less than a minute later. Dwayne Mardenborough came off the bench to score his first goal since December 2004 using his strength to power his way through the Bettws defence and finish confidently.
Ton Pentre will now hope that this team performance will see them climb the table and back into the title challenge.
