TON PENTRE 3 - 0 MAESTEG PARK
MacWhirter Welsh Football League Division One
Saturday 2nd February 2008
Ton Pentre handed a debut to their transfer deadline day signing Andrew Pearson who was rewarded with a goal following his hard work in the match with Maesteg Park Athletic.
Pearson joins the Rhondda Bulldogs from Division One rivals Afan Lido and the striker was in the thick of the action throughout the match.
Ton made a strong start to the match and had a goal ruled out in the very first minute for offside but the Ynys Park outfit were quick to get over this disappointment and were quick to create more chances.
Scott Jones started a move from midfield when he supplied a pass to Andrew Hughes who had made a run up the left. The Ton Captain cut the ball into the box and Pearson connected but sent the ball around Gary Wager’s left hand post.
Soon after Alyn Jones was the latest to find joy on the left of the pitch when he crossed into the penalty area where the ball was once again met by Pearson. The new signing hit his shot wide and Maesteg were lucky not to have conceded.
Ton got the breakthrough on 29 minutes with a wonderful passage of play. Hughes played a through ball to Jonathan Kift who held the ball up as the Bulldogs Captain made a run into the box. Kift released possession to Hughes who turned in the box and rifled in a low shot to give Ton the lead.
Thirty-two seconds later Ton grabbed themselves another goal. From the re-start of play Maesteg quickly lost control of the ball and Alyn Jones took the ball up the left wing. The ball reached Pearson in the penalty area and the striker bagged himself a debut goal by firing high into the net leaving Wager helpless.
The Rhondda Bulldogs made it 3-0 early in the second half when Scott Jones supplied a pass to Alyn Jones on the left. Jones cut in field and whizzed a low ball across the box and Kift side footed it into the net for a good finish.
Defender Mark Crutch should have put Ton Pentre even further in the lead following a corner kick. As the ball came out to Kift he curled it back into the danger zone where Crutch spurned an excellent chance by hitting the ball wide instead of finding the back of an unattended goalmouth at the far post.
As always Jonathan Kift was lively up front and constantly lost his marker and he did so again in the 70th minute when he ran clear into the box. He tapped the ball around Wager but the Maesteg keeper raised a leg to trip the former Cardiff City striker. The Referee awarded a penalty kick and showed the keeper a yellow card having judged that it was not an obvious goalscoring opportunity.
From the spot Dale Price decided to strike to the right but Wager guessed correctly pushing the ball onto the post. From the rebound Pearson struck his shot over the crossbar.
Although Ton Pentre should have made better use of their multiple chances they will be pleased with all three points to keep up with leaders Goytre United, who won 3-2 at Cwmbran Town.
Ton continue their challenge at Ynys Park against bottom club Garw who come into the match following a 7-1 defeat against Caldicot Town. This game will kick off at 2pm.
