Ton Pentre ended the season with a goalless draw at Cold Bath Road where Caerleon goalkeeper Nicky Church helped the Gwent club secure the point they needed for Division One survival.
The Rhondda Bulldogs were desperate to end the 2008-09 season with a win but despite creating good opportunities they were denied each and every time by some superb goalkeeping.
When a first half corner kick was sent into the box with pinpoint accuracy Ryan Morgan thought he had scored when he connected well with a header. However, Church acrobatically tipped the ball over the cross bar for a super save.
Later in the half Chris Jones started a move with a run up the right. He passed inside to Alyn Jones who linked with Shane Brewer on the edge of the Caerleon box. On receiving the return pass Alyn Jones ran into the penalty area where he found space to shoot. Church reacted quickly to charge the shot down and deny the player from giving Ton the lead.
In the second half Chris Jones helped to create another goal scoring opportunity when he brought the ball down on the edge of the box before placing it into Andrew Hughes’ path. On taking the ball into the box he took a swipe at goal but once again Church narrowed the angle to pull off another fine save.
Caerleon thought they had taken the lead midway through the second half when from a free kick sent into the box the ball was struck against the cross bar. It rebounded to another Caerleon player on the line who placed the ball in the net. Their celebrations were cut short as the Assistant Referee had his flagg raised for offside. The goal scorer was offside from the initial shot that was hit against the bar.
The match finished 0-0 with the result providing Caerleon with the point that they needed to avoid relegation from Welsh League Division One.
