Ton Pentre enjoyed a fine three goal win over Bryntirion Athletic with the Rhondda Bulldogs producing an excellent display of skilful football.
Bryntirion probably had the best chance to take the lead during the opening exchanges between the two teams as good play led to their striker running in on goal. Ton goalkeeper Richard Jeffries pulled off a great one-on-one save to keep the ball out of the net.
That save proved to be the catalyst for Ton’s goal as moments later the Bulldogs won a corner kick following a useful attack. When the ball was sent into the box Gareth Wharton jumped above his opponent to head the ball at goal but his attempt was denied on the line. However, Ian Jones battled to get a foot on the ball and he poked in the opener.
Ton were domineering following the goal as confidence spread throughout the team and the Bulldogs came close to increasing their lead with a wonderful move that saw the ball flow from one side of the pitch to the other. Andrew Hughes played a measured pass to Chris Jones allowing the young striker a route into the box where he took a crack at goal only to see his effort well saved by Josh Payne.
The Bulldogs did add a second goal before half time following another fantastic passage of play. Liam Hutchinson started the move off when he played a nice through ball to Alyn Jones out on the right. Jones took a quick look to see who was in support inside the box where he spotted a run by Ian Jones. As a result he crossed into Ian Jones allowing the striker to powerfully head in a fantastic goal.
Early in the second half Bryntirion went forward after a Ton attack broke down deep inside their half. As the Bryntirion player was running with the ball he decided to take a shot from the edge of the 18-yard box with just Jeffries to beat. The Ton goalkeeper produced another excellent save to deny Bryntirion a way back into the match.
Steve Edwards put the result beyond doubt when he scored an opportunistic goal after Alyn Jones saw his chipped shot hit the right hand post before rolling across the line. Edwards was running into the box from the left wing and the ball rolled directly into his path and he prodded it into the net to make it 3-0.
This win has boosted morale in a Ton squad that has recently been hit with suspensions and injuries. The Bulldogs will take
the confidence that was gained at Bryntirion into their next match at title chasing Ento Aberaman on Wednesday 29th April
2009. This encounter kicks off at 6.30pm.
